stray thoughts

like a dragon: pirate yakuza in hawaii

I enjoyed my time with Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii overall! but the story itself has a lot less meat on it than every other Yakuza story. as I described it to my partner, the story is "surprisingly straightforward" which is not generally how Yakuza stories go. sure, this one had plenty of betrayals and some hidden agendas, but, ultimately, it wasn't anything particularly shocking or unexpected.

for me, the real highlight was the rare moments that Majima shared with Nishida, Minami, and, most of all, Saejima. unfortunately, Majima is lacking his goddamn memory for most of these, so it's a lot more reminiscing than making fresh memories. but... ough those finale moments with Saejima! I am absolutely living for the way their relationship is re-solidfied in those moments.

beyond that, gameplay was the usual Yakuza fun, and I can't really complain about it! although... I did have a strong tendency to jump around a lot during combat because unlike every other playable character thus far, Majima is a jumper. in the other games, I'll often cancel my moves by dodging, but Majima will jump instead of dodge if he's standing still or dashing. so I ended up jumping so, so much at non-optimal times lol.
